Have you heard of the Divergent Series and the three films, by Veronica Roth, a Christian author? The first book and film, Divergent, is set in the future, in which the human race is recovering after a war.

The Divergent Series factions

In the city of Chicago, everyone is divided into five factions. Abnegation for the selfless, Amity for the kind, Dauntless for the brave, Erudite for the intelligent and Candor for the honest.

Those in each faction are defined by their factions traits and aspire to be like these and put down the others. Once you have chosen your faction at 16, you cannot return to the faction you were born into.

Five key characteristics

One of the heroes of the Divergent Series is called Four. He belongs to Dauntless and later becomes the faction’s leader. There is a great scene where his friend Tris asks to see his tattoo. She is amazed to see that it contains the symbols of each of the five factions, not just Dauntless.

Four explains that he doesn’t want to be only one thing- he wants to be brave, selfless, intelligent, honest and kind. This is a great aspiration, and one we should strive towards each day, with the help of the Holy Spirit.

We cannot take our possessions. We cannot take our money. However, we can take with us our character. This will last forever which is of inestimable value.
