In my previous post on the Greek Crisis I looked at some of the historical reasons for the crisis. In this post I want to look more closely at what God may be saying through this. I do believe that God is giving us a warning.
Why Greece is significant
Greece is the birth place of Western civilisation. Even the Romans incorporated much Greek thought and ideas. It is also the birth place of democracy which is now the foundation of many nations. Greece is also where the Gospel first spread to after Palestine, becoming the base of the Early Christian Church outside the East, which then spread to Rome. Philippi, a Greek city, partnered with Paul to spread the Gospel to the Roman world. Now the country has only 0.4% Bible-believing Christians, according to Operation World statistics.
God’s warning but with hope
So is not God speaking to the Western world, and all those that rely on democratic countries, that without Him they are lost? Nations cannot build themselves on the foundations of democracy without Him. They will eventually come to ruin. If Greece, the birth place of Western civilisation, comes to ruin, then what could also be the fate of all those nations that place the same trust in themselves and in their system of government and have neglected the Gospel of Jesus?
Doors of opportunity
However there is much hope. God is shaking the nations to bring many to a knowledge of Him. It is a time when God is opening up many new doors of opportunity for the Good News of Jesus. See my book “Preparing for the Economic Storm” that gives many insights from the Bible and prophetic insight into what God is doing in the Greek Crisis and the global financial crisis and how to prepare in the light of this.
