What does the letter to the Hebrews say about the normal Christian life? You will be amazed. This article looks at 5 things that will stir our hearts afresh.
The author of Hebrews (probably Paul) has to remind them of how it was at the beginning to stir them to return to this.
But instead they wanted to go back to living the comfortable life, where faith wasn’t necessary. Then he reminds them of how powerful it was:
A powerful birth
“God testified to it (the preaching of the Gospel) by signs, wonders and various miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit”(2:4). The Corinthian church was similar. Although only a young church full of immature Christians Paul said that they did not lack any spiritual gift (1 Cor 1:7)
An experience of God’s power breaking through
“you have tasted…..the powers of the coming age” (6:5)
This is part of the normal Christian life.
Everyone can minister
“By this time you ought to be teachers” (5:12). God has a part for everyone in a congregation to grow the Kingdom. We don’t have to be a leader in the church to do this or in full time ministry.
Everyone can pray powerfully for others
The laying on of hands to pray for others to receive the power of the Holy spirit is a basic teaching (6:2). That is, it was for all to practice. But Paul has to remind them of this basic practice and others again.
All of this arose because of faith
Paul reminds them of the main principle that in the normal Christian life “The righteous shall live by faith” (10:38). There’s no going back. If they do to become comfortable they will lose all the things above and more!
We are in danger in many countries of losing all these aspects of the Christian faith through going back to a comfortable living, where we don’t need to exercise faith very often. The Christian Gospel is powerful. Let’s make a renewed commitment to practice it, as it is in the Bible.
