Have you ever thought what this friendship with God may have been like? Here are 7 aspects of this amazing friendship that can help with our own relationship with God:
1.Face to face (Num 12:8)
That is coming very close, no hesitation, longing.
He wanted to be with God, that’s why he demanded that God’s presence go with them in Ex 33:15-16.
2.Incredible intimacy
Such was the experience of intimacy, Moses didn’t need to eat (or drink) for 40 days when he met with God on the mountain (Dt 9:18).Obviously the latter is only possible supernaturally. We can’t normally survive more than 3 days without water.
The longing to eat and drink was replaced by a much greater longing of intimacy.
3.He approached as a Humble servant
Moses wasn’t concerned with his own desires but those of God’s first then others. He waited on the Lord, that is he effectively asked God, “What can I do for you today?” This is the meaning of standing before the Lord, as Elijah did (1 Ki 17:1, the meaning of “serve”) and what the Living Creatures do before the throne. Those closest to God are those that serve.
4.Openness to all senses to be touched
During these times with God all his senses would have been activated, not just hearing God. Just look at Ex 19:16-19 where God appears on Mount Sinai. There’s thunder, lightning, smoke and fire.
5.Open-hearted to God
Paul urges the Corinthians to be open-hearted to him (2 Cor 6:11-13). Or they would miss out on the grace that God would give to them through him.
Moses was incredibly open to God and therefore to receiving His grace and His glory.
6.He asked questions
The Bible doesn’t say much about what happened in those 40 days. We can assume that God instructed him in the Law, that Moses later wrote down and forms the first 5 books of the Bible. But it is clear that it was a two-way conversation and therefore it is very likely Moses asked God many questions that he then wrote about in the first 5 books.
We too, in our friendship with God, can ask Him questions and expect Him to answer. He likes this sort of interaction.
7.He focussed more on God’s Name and His concerns
We tend to focus more on our own problems. Evan Roberts, the Welsh revivalist, was like Moses. He showed he cared passionately for the honour of God’s Name across the earth when he began to seek God about the ‘failure’ of Christianity. Out of this God answered his seeking with visitations and then a great revival, the Welsh Revival of 1904.
Why is it important to look at Moses’ friendship with God? Because Paul says that the glory we have in the New Covenant, through Jesus, is so much greater and it is for all of us!! This is truly amazing.
